  • Animals in Education, Play and Mental Well-Being

Welcome to Animals in Mind Blog - our space to share all about Animal Assisted Therapy, Animal Assisted Education and More! About me - Lynn Hart, I am a life-long animal lover, qualified teacher (PGCE), qualified in Animal Welfare and Behaviour (BSc Hons) and specialise in Animal Assisted Education and Therapy with an Masters in Education (MA Ed). I have personally and professionally experienced the profound effects of the human-animal bond from a very young age, initially with my childhood dogs Blackie and Dasher and latterly in my work in schools and colleges. One of the career changing moments for me came in 2018, when working in a Further Education College. As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, all serious student behaviour issues came to my attention. This was, most often in a student disciplinary, when a teacher felt they could do 'no more' and a student was facing possible exclusion. One young lady who may never know the impact she had on me, changed my working life from the day I met her in an 'exclusion meeting'. I will call her Aneesha. Aneesha was struggling, she had been in and out of care for several years due to the substance abuse of the grown ups in her life. She 'acted up' in class, sought attention and struggled with behaviour management. At it's peak, she threw a chair at the teacher - distressing for all. When meeting Aneesha, she was 'shut down', would not look me in the eye, had her hood hiding her eyes and her head down. Trying to connect to reach out to find out more about her was not easy. I needed to find out what made her feel happy. Needless to say, the answer was 'when with her Aunties German Shepherd Dog'. Once our mutual connection about our love of dogs (and other animals) was established, this young woman managed to tell me what made her feel alive, how the dog brought her happiness, how he didn't judge her, and seemed to understand when she felt low. What she described, I now know to be the 'human-animal bond'. A bond that I have the pleasure in saying fulfils both my professional work and my my personal life. It is the reason why I share my life with a menagerie of wonderful and eclectic animals. Recognising the impact that animals had on people, particularly those who struggle in social settings (such as school) either emotionally, behaviourally or socially; Lynn set up Animals in Mind in 2021 and now offers Animal Assisted Therapy and Animal Assisted Education. What we will blog about? Our blogs will be short and sweet (like Pippin, our Therapy Dog here!) and add to the growing information on benefits of the human-animal bond. We will cover everything related to Animal Assisted Therapy, a growing field in the UK. We will share our adventures through our Animal Assisted Education Activity. Importantly, we will share lots of fun and fascinating facts about what our lovely animal assistants have been up to! Stay connected Are you also amazed at the human animal bond? Are you intrigued about how animals can assist in education? Do you simply love seeing and hearing stories about companion animals.
